This paper aims to reflect on the role of jurists in time of plague between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, highlighting some characteristics of the complex and articulated academic world during epidemiological emergency. Between 1522 and 1524 some representative civilians who taught “mos italicus” at Pavia, Avignone and Bologna, such as Ripa and Previdelli, were the firsts to assemble in methodical exposition the scattered juridical disquisition upon the theme of the plagues epidemics. They examined many practical cases relating to the subject of plague, according to the knowledge and principles of their time, and dealt with the theme of the legal basis of the professional status of university teaching staff and salaries of the professors during the lockdown.
