The basic purpose of the new Italian D.Lgs. 192/2005 and 311/2006 about energy efficient buildings is to adopt the necessary measures to respect commitments about environmental protection and primary energy resources savings, taken with the endorsement of the Kyoto Protocol. New approaches in residential and industrial air-conditioning systems can play a fundamental role to achieve these goals: the use of innovative heat pumps in buildings represent a good solution to this, due to their flexibility and to the higher efficiencies reached in last years. A comparative energy and exergy analysis has been carried out among the most promising solutions (such intercooled continuous load adjusting, two-stage condensation, cascade cycle systems) to investigate the real energy savings achieved.
