Automated percutaneous discectomy (APD) has been widely employed for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation in recent years. An assessment is made of its employment in 10 semiprofessional athletes, with particular reference to sport resumption times and levels. Excellent results with a mean resumption time of 1.5 months were obtained in all cases. When appropriately indicated, therefore, APD can be regarded as a technique that gives excellent results in athletes following the failure of nonoperative management it also allows earlier resumption of sport at previous performance levels than conventional surgery. Abstract
