The MOU between Turkey and Libya on the delimitation of their respective maritime jurisdiction areas, signed on 27/11/2019, and, more generally, the imperial nostalgia that apparently shape Turkish foreign policy in the areas of Mediterranean and Middle East violate the rights and the content of the Agreements on the delimitation of some maritime areas in the Eastern Mediterranean, in force mainly between EU Member States according to UNCLOS, which does not include Turkey as a party, rules and principles relevant to the rights and prerogatives of smaller islands and as stated in international jurisprudence. This situation leads to a hotbed of conflict, in particular between the two main NATO bastions in that area, i.e., Greece and Turkey, with an uncertain outcome.
