LA PAIN NEUROSCIENCE EDUCATION E IL MODELLO BIOPSICOSOCIALE - BASI TEORICHE E APPLICAZIONI CLINICHE

Persistent musculoskeletal pain is a common condition in the population and a disorder difficult to manage by physiotherapists. The recent adoption of the biopsychosocial model, together with recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience, is leading to a change in assessing and treating people with chronic musculoskeletal pain. The increasing understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms in the development and maintenance of persistent pain have recently led to the birth of a therapeutic intervention: Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE). PNE aims to reconceptualise wrong beliefs about pain in people with musculoskeletal pain. The present professional issue aims to provide an overview of PNE by describing its principles, available tools, and possible integrations with therapeutic exercise (ET) and manual therapy (TM), in order to stimulate the reader towards a different clinical approach.
